ERG, also known as the ETS-related gene, is a member of the ETS family of transcription factors that play important roles in cell development, differentiation, proliferation, apoptosis, and tissue remodeling. The antibody labels endothelial cells, lymphocytes, and prostate cancer cells. ERG expression has not been detected in breast, colon, and urothelial carcinomas, while the presence of the protein has been confirmed in a subset of prostate carcinomas. Furthermore, the TMPRSS2-ERG fusion, caused by translocations and interstitial deletions, is suspected in aggressive forms of prostate cancer. The EWS-ERG or EWS-Fli-1 fusion is a feature of Ewing sarcoma. ERG expression has been observed in both benign and malignant vascular endothelial tumors, such as hemangiomas and Kaposi sarcomas.
