Cadherin 17, also called liver-intestinal (LI) cadherin, belongs to the cadherin superfamily. Cadherins are calcium-dependent cell adhesion proteins that play a role in cell recognition and separation, morphogenetic regulation, and tumor suppression. Cadherin 17 is expressed in the gastrointestinal tract and pancreatic duct. Normal human tissues that stain strongly with cadherin 17 include the cecal epithelium, the colon epithelium, and the small intestinal epithelium. Other normal human tissues do not stain with cadherin 17, suggesting its potential for use as a marker for identifying primary tumor sites.
