CD171, also known as L1CAM, is a transmembrane protein that functions as a cell adhesion molecule and plays an important role in nervous system development, including neuronal migration and differentiation. CD171 is involved in neuron-neuron adhesion, neurite fasciculation, and neurite outgrowth, among other processes. In addition to the brain, L1CAM is also normally expressed in the renal tubular epithelium, intestinal crypt, and peripheral nerves. L1CAM has been studied in various tumors, including colorectal, renal cell, ovarian, and thyroid carcinomas. Cytoplasmic and membrane expression of L1CAM significantly correlated with poor clinical outcome, defined as aggressive tumor growth, invasion, and an unfavorable prognosis.
