Keratins are cytoplasmic intermediate filament proteins expressed by epithelial cells. Cytokeratin 20 is a type I keratin found primarily in the gastric and intestinal mucosa. The antibody against CK20 is useful for identifying epithelial cells of these tissues under normal, hyperplastic, and neoplastic conditions. CK20 is known to detect a number of adenocarcinomas arising from epithelia, such as colorectal carcinomas, transitional cell and Merkel cell carcinomas, and gastric and pancreatic tumors. Breast carcinomas are generally nonreactive. CK20 is often used in a panel with the antibody cytokeratin 7.
