Inhibin downregulates FSH synthesis and inhibits FSH secretion from the pituitary gland. Inhibin is a dimer consisting of an alpha and beta subunit. In normal tissue, anti-inhibin alpha labels granulosa cells of the ovary, Sertoli and Leydig cells of the testis, and the zona reticularis of the adrenal cortex. It helps differentiate between tumors of the adrenal cortex and renal cell carcinomas and detects stromal tumors of the ovary and trophoblastic tumors.
