Neuron-specific enolase (NSE) represents one of the three main groups of enolases. The other two enolases are non-neuronal and muscle-specific enolases. NSE is present in high concentrations in neurons as well as in central and peripheral neuroendocrine cells. The antibody reacts with cells of neural and neuroendocrine lineage. It can be used to identify peripheral nerves, neural, and neuroendocrine tumors, such as neuroblastomas, retinoblastomas, desmoplastic malignant melanomas, and small cell lung cancer. The detection of neural and neuroendocrine tumors requires additional markers such as chromogranin, synaptophysin, and keratins in this specific panel.
