AMACR, also known as P504S or alpha-methylacyl-CoA racemase, is an essential enzyme in the β-oxidation of branched-chain fatty acids and their derivatives. The enzyme is expressed in mitochondria and peroxisomes of numerous tissues, such as the liver, bile ducts, kidneys, and lungs. AMACR is overexpressed in patients with prostate cancer compared to benign tissue. Its highest expression is found in localized prostate cancer and decreases once the carcinoma forms metastases. Therefore, it is useful to use AMACR as a biomarker for the aggressiveness of prostate cancer and its progression. The antibody can be particularly useful in a panel with HMW cytokeratin and/or p63.
