PAX2 is a transcription factor highly expressed during kidney development and in the metanephric mesenchyme after ureteral bud induction. It is a key factor in the conversion of mesenchyme to epithelium. In normal adult tissues, PAX2 has been detected primarily in the urogenital system, including the kidney, ureteral epithelium, oviductal epithelium, ovary, and uterus. In tumors, PAX2 has been detected in renal cell carcinoma, Wilms tumors, nephrogenic adenomas, and papillary serous carcinoma of the ovary.
