Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) is a glycoprotein enzyme secreted by the epithelial cells of the prostate gland. PSA is produced for ejaculate, where it liquefies the seminal fluid in the semen clot and allows sperm to swim freely. It is also thought to help break up cervical mucus, allowing sperm to enter the uterus. PSA is present in small amounts in the serum of men with healthy prostates but is often elevated in prostate cancer or other prostate diseases. In addition to being an indicator of prostate cancer, it can also detect prostatitis or benign prostatic hyperplasia.
