PSMA (prostate-specific membrane antigen) is a zinc metalloenzyme/class II membrane glycoprotein found in membranes. It is primarily expressed in four tissues of the body, including the prostatic epithelium, the proximal tubules of the kidney, the jejunal brush strip of the small intestine, and ganglia of the nervous system. Human PSMA is highly expressed in the prostate, approximately 100 times more than in most other tissues. In some prostate carcinomas, PSMA is the second most frequently upregulated gene product, with an 8- to 12-fold increase over levels in non-cancerous prostate cells. Due to this high expression, PSMA is being developed as a potential biomarker for therapy and imaging in some cancers. In human prostate cancer, tumors with higher PSMA expression are associated with a shorter time to disease progression and a higher percentage of patients with relapse.
