Beta-catenin plays an important role in the Wnt signaling pathway and is essential for cell junctions. It has a major impact on development, cell proliferation, and differentiation. It is normally located in the cytoplasm of the cell in the submembranous region and in the membrane of epithelial cells, consistent with its role in the cell adhesion complex. Mutations in the gene lead to nuclear accumulation, which has been demonstrated in fibromatosis of the breast and abdomen and is therefore useful in distinguishing this tumor from other fibroblast-like lesions.
