Caldesmon is a regulatory protein that interacts with actin, myosin, tropomyosin, and calmodulin. It is present in smooth muscle and other tissues. Caldesmon is useful for distinguishing smooth muscle and is more specific than desmin and muscle-specific actin. The caldesmon antibody is a marker for identifying epithelioid mesotheliomas and can be used to differentiate between uterine leiomyomas and endometrial stromal tumors.
