Desmin is a type III intermediate filament found in smooth muscle, skeletal muscle, and cardiac muscle, primarily near the Z-lines in the sarcomeres. This antibody reacts with tumors of myoid origin, including leiomyomas, rhabdomyomas, and perivascular cells of glomus tumors of the skin. It is used to detect the myogenic components/derivations of tumors and to differentiate mesotheliomas from carcinomas.
