CD138, also known as syndecan-1, is a transmembrane heparan sulfate proteoglycan and belongs to the syndecan family of proteoglycans, which mediate cell binding, cell signaling, and cytoskeletal organization. The syndecan-1 protein is involved in cell proliferation, cell migration, and cell-matrix interactions. This antibody is a useful marker for identifying normal mature plasma cells and early pre-B cells, while other hematolymphoid cells are negative. Various types of epithelial cells are also CD138-positive. Among hematolymphoid neoplasms, CD138 is expressed in virtually all cases of malignant plasma cells. Among non-hematolymphoid neoplasms, CD138 is expressed in various carcinomas.
