CD34 is a single-pass type I transmembrane glycoprotein and functions as a cell-cell adhesion factor. It is expressed on endothelial cells, hematopoietic progenitor cells, fibroblasts, and other stromal components. The protein is thought to mediate the attachment of stem cells to the bone marrow, extracellular matrix, or stromal cells. CD34 is a well-known marker for the quantification and purification of hematopoietic progenitor cells. CD34 plays a useful role in the identification of tumors with endothelial or lymphoid differentiation. It also aids in the detection of gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST).
