CD71, also known as the transferrin receptor, is required for iron delivery from transferrin to erythroid cells for hemoglobin synthesis and is highly expressed in early erythroid precursors and erythroblasts. Expression is lost when these cells cease hemoglobin synthesis and mature into erythrocytes. This antibody detects erythroid precursor cells in normal and neoplastic samples and is widely expressed in carcinomas, sarcomas, leukemias, and lymphomas.
