In the blood coagulation cascade, factor XIII is activated by thrombin and calcium to form a transglutaminase that stabilizes the fibrin clot. This antibody detects the subunit of coagulation factor XIIIa. Defects in factor XIIIa cause factor XIII subunit A deficiency, an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by a lifelong bleeding tendency, impaired wound healing, and recurrent miscarriages. Factor XIIIa is expressed in platelets, megakaryocytes, fibroblast-like cells in the placenta, uterus, and prostate, monocytes and macrophages, and dermal dendritic cells. Anti-factor XIIIa is used to identify fibrohistiocytic neoplasms such as dermatofibromas.
