Collagen

Collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body, and Type I collagen is a major structural component of skin, bone, tendon, and other fibrous connective tissues. To create a more in vivo-like environment, researchers commonly culture cells either within collagen hydrogels or on collagen-coated surfaces. Advanced BioMatrix offers a broad collagen portfolio for 2D and 3D applications, including Type I atelocollagen, telocollagen, human collagen, rat tail collagen, collagen-coated plates, and collagen bioinks.

Typical working concentrations for 3D collagen hydrogels are around 1 mg/mL for telocollagen and about 1.5 mg/mL for atelocollagen. For hydrogel preparation, collagen is generally neutralized to approximately pH 7.0–7.4 and adjusted to isotonic conditions of about 300 mOsm before warming to 37°C to form a 3D hydrogel. These parameters help support physiologically relevant cell culture conditions and reproducible gel formation.

3D Bioprinting

Advanced BioMatrix also provides products and application support for 3D bioprinting workflows. Its bioprinting portfolio includes collagen-based bioinks and support materials developed for extrusion-based and other advanced printing approaches. The company highlights Lifeink® collagen bioinks and LifeSupport® support slurry for FRESH bioprinting as key solutions for building biologically relevant 3D structures.

Common 3D bioprinting methods include:

☉Extrusion Bioprinting: This method uses mechanical or pneumatic dispensing systems to deposit bioinks layer by layer and build 3D constructs. It is widely used because of its strong versatility in material selection and cell compatibility. Advanced BioMatrix specifically presents its Lifeink® collagen bioinks as solutions for extrusion-based 3D bioprinting.

☉DLP-Based BioprintingThis approach uses visible or UV light to polymerize photosensitive bioinks into defined 3D structures. It is valued for high resolution and fast printing performance in applications requiring precise layer formation.

☉Inkjet Bioprinting: Inkjet bioprinting is a non-contact method that deposits biomaterials drop by drop, making it suitable for lower-viscosity materials and micro-patterning applications.

☉Two-Photon Polymerization (2PP)This advanced technology uses a focused laser beam to polymerize photosensitive materials and create complex 3D structures with extremely high spatial resolution. Advanced BioMatrix describes 2PP as a high-resolution option within modern bioprinting workflows.
