It is a β-lactam antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell-wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), thereby inhibiting peptidoglycan synthesis, a critical component of the bacterial cell wall. Ampicillin sodium salt is active against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including E. coli, β-lactam-sensitive VRE, vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus species, Staphylococcus aureus, and Streptococcus pneumoniae.
